WE DON'T KNOW HOW THE EYE OF IVAN MISSED US,
BE WE DO KNOW WE ARE GRATEFUL. 9/16/04
Below is the satellite of us at 545pm, at 720pm
we lost power,
at 2am the eye almost on land, made a drastic and incredible turn and went
in east of the mobile bay making the landfall point Baldwin County Alabama.
We experienced hurricane force winds from aprox. 8pm 9/15/04 until around
4am 9/16/04

-MOST RECENT UPDATES
-
- All Harrison, Hancock County Schools and the cities contained within
will resume school on Monday 9/20/04
-
click here for sunheralds updated openings and closings at sunherald.com
- Starting at approximately Noon cst 9/16/04GCIS traveled from Jim
Ramsey Road/Old Fort Bayou Intersection in Vancleave to Highway 57, then
south to Hwy 90 in Ocean Springs, and west to Hwy 49 in Gulfport going
down hwy 90 in Biloxi.
Then north on hwy 49 to orange grove. During this trip it was noted that
for every mile west we went it appeared the damaged was less severe,
indicating that the eastern areas might have been harder hit for the
main part. We saw no standing water on the roadways the majority of
damage was tree limb, branch related, almost every yard and road side
was carpeted except for downtown city areas which had awning and
metal/wood trim related issues.
We noted several houses and mobile homes with minor shingle damage, and
trim/gutter damage. On hwy 57 we saw a metal carport folded in half with
a tree laying in the middle. As we traveled thru the south eastern part
of Jackson county we saw about 4 houses with window damage. We saw
several wooden fences down. Almost all traffic lights were either
missing, damaged or hanging tilted from the wind. On Highway 90 in
Biloxi we noticed the Grand Casino in Biloxi had suffered some very
noticeable damage to the front of one of their buildings.
Going down Bayview drive in Biloxi (the bay bay) a couple of piers were
destroyed, but several still stand. We found the waffle house on hwy 90
and Reynoir in Biloxi open and packed, along with the IHOP by Edgewater
mall on 90 and also on hwy 49. As we reached Gulfport the damage
appeared to lessen a bit, we were able to find several restaurants open,
like the pizza hut on Highway 90 and on Hwy 49. Several Fast Food
restaurants. Cracker Barrel and others at the I-10 and Hwy 49 area were
open and the further north you go the more you found open.
Streets were good, and in Gulfport they had police at all non working
traffic lights, Biloxi did not, and several people on highway 90 were
driving straight thru areas that previously had traffic lights, PLEASE
REMEMBER YOU ARE TO TREAT ALL BROKEN OR DOWN LIGHTS AS 4 WAY STOPS.
In all it was impressive that we did so well. I am sure if we had
traveled east on 90 instead of west the damage would have been more
severe. Clean up was already started with several people taking down
plywood already. We did see power trucks out working on lines, and MDOT
out working to clean roads and repair traffic lights.
Curfews lifted for all 3 coastal counties.
- All 3 counties make it thru Ivan in relatively good shape thanks to
a remarkable last minute eye change, just moments prior to landfall,
the eye headed due east so the most severe winds and weather hit east of
Mobile Bay.
- The further west you are the better off you made out.
- Thousands still without power, including GCIS, this limited update
brought to you courtesy of a generator.
- GCIS makes it thru Ivan with aprox. 4 downed trees and some slight
shingle damage.
- Call your local law enforcement non emergency # to find out about
road closings.
- Several already dead in Florida
- Early reports indicate possible casualties in Alabama
- Ivan now less than 80mph and moving northward, at 4am Ivan was 40
miles north west of Pensacola Florida.
- As the time comes for repairs beware of fly by night repair men,
they need to be licensed and reputable.
- Do not drive into standing water
- Do not go near downed power lines.
- Boil water you are not sure about.
- Take pictures of damage and keep all receipts for any temporary
repair work you do for your insurance claims.
- 9/16/04 weather expected to be reach a high in the 80's with gusty
wind occasionally that subside in the evening,
( with power out we want those gusty winds.)
- All Jackson County Schools closed on Friday listen over weekend to
find out about Monday.
- Edgewater mall to open Friday at noon
- Hancock county schools open on Monday
- Some Hancock Bank locations will open late on Thursday call your
branch.
- Coast Casinos closed until further notice.
- GCIS received a call at 11am cst stating a family was turned around
on I-10 southbound at meridian trying to head back to coast from
Columbus MS
- Thousands without power on MS gulf coast, MS power, Coast Electric,
and Singing River Power all working on restoration.
- Out of town evacuees asked to wait to return until Friday Morning
- Initial Results indicate Coast Casinos faired well.
